Body

Many people seek Cenegenics because they are not happy with their physique. Some patients have never really focused on their appearance, while others are looking to get every last bit of perfect physique possible. Because our program starts from a metabolic, hormonal and medical perspective, both types of patients can achieve they’re goals. What’s important is that we are here to help you reach your goal.

  1. Are you spending more time trying to stay in shape, with poorer results that are harder to achieve?
  2. Would you feel better at a smaller waist size or dress size?
  3. Are you having trouble reaching your goals, even with a trainer?
  4. Are you workouts ineffective?

If you answered yes to any of the above, you’re not alone. More time at the gym is not the answer! While physical exercise is very important to long term health, it should be the right type of exercise in the right amounts, customized to your particular fitness physiology and metabolic needs. In combination with correcting underlying hormonal and metabolic imbalances, my patients typically achieve stellar results and a return to higher levels of athletic performance.

At Cenegenics, you work closely with my exercise physiologist and me to give you exactly what you need to be able to reach physical and functional goals.

Sleep

  1. Do you wake up feeling sluggish and tired?
  2. Do you sleep less or more than you used to?
  3. Do you snore?
  4. Do you wake up several times through the night?
  5. Do you sweat through the night?
Sleep is a very important part of your life. It is the time that the body uses to repair tissues, grow muscle, fight disease, activate the immune system, and much more. Without proper sleep, your body cannot rejuvenate itself the way it should. Sometimes, the stressful lives lead to poor sleep. Other times, it’s a loss of synchronous or circadian hormone secretion that is the cause. Often, it’s a combination of both that feed into each other. Most importantly, poor sleep leads to obesity and shorter lifespans. Did you know that the body secretes its highest amount of growth hormone around 2 a.m. while you’re in deep sleep? If you’re not sleeping well, your body is likely low in this important hormone, leading to loss of muscle, bone density and tissue strength… and you guessed it… an increase in fat.

Memory / Focus

With aging, many people experience a decline in mental sharpness. It’s often described as not being able to remember things as well, or having trouble staying on task. When hormonal and metabolic imbalances occur, it often will manifest itself in mental functioning and mood changes.
  1. Do you find it harder to remember names or events that occurred recently?
  2. Do you find that you have to push yourself hard to stay on task?
  3. Do you become fatigued after time spent concentrating compared to when you were younger?
  4. Do you find that your ambition and drive is not quite what it used to be?
  5. Do you feel more depressed than you used to, or find it hard to enjoy things as much as you used to?
  6. Is it harder to control your emotions than when you were younger?

These symptoms occur both due to declines in hormones as well as changes in proportions of hormones as they relate to each other. In addition, nutrtion, fitness and neurotransmitter levels can affect mental functioning. A thorough evaluation can get to the root cause and help correct these imbalances so you can feel and perform like yourself again.

Fitness

Remember when we were kids? Fitness was easy. We played games like Tag, Kick-Ball, Hide-and-go-Seek, or sports like baseball and football. In our hectic lives, we find less time to play, and exercise has become more structured and goal oriented. When we were younger, it worked; but now I’m sure you find that you are working out harder and getting fewer results. Many factors come into play as culprits. Most people don’t perform the type of exercise that is actually geared towards the results they want. At Cenegenics, we take a scientific approach to exercise that is designed to get results in the shortest amount of time based on your individual physiology.
  1. Do you find yourself spending more time at the gym, only to get fewer results?
  2. Have you recently run a marathon, only to realize you didn’t lose that much weight?
  3. Do you find exercise to be extremely fatiguing?
  4. Does it take longer for you to recover from exercise sessions?
  5. Do you find that your strength has been decreasing, despite more effort?
  6. Have you been suffering from increased joint pain and inflammation?
  7. Have injuries prevented you from exercising the way you would like?
At Cenegenics Chicago, we take a scientific approach to exercise physiology, allowing us to create customized exercise regimens for all fitness levels. These programs are specifically created based on the patient’s own desires, time and proclivity for exercise. There is no “one right way” to do things. It only works if you can do it, and we specialize in helping you achieve results in a way that you can do it. In combination with proper nutrition, correcting off-balance biochemistry, and normalizing hormone levels, our patients experience significant body composition changes.

Nutrition

Nutrition is so confusing. With so many fad diets out there and theories on nutrition, it’s no wonder that so many people are confused. One thing is for certain: despite all the attention given to nutrition and dieting, Americans are getting fatter. If you’re reading this, by now you have tried “losing weight” through several diets, only to find the results variable at best, and temporary as the norm. Most patients coming to Cenegenics have found that even though they are spending more time and energy trying to “eat right”, they are getting fewer results. Do the following questions apply to you?
  1. How has your nutrition changed over the years?
  2. Are you getting the results you expect from the improvement in nutritional changes?
  3. Do you find it hard to maintain weight loss after dieting?
  4. Do you find it hard to resist sugary snacks or carb-heavy snacks?
  5. Do you have late night “snack attacks”?
  6. Do you have trouble making good choices when you are busy or on the road?
  7. Are some foods bothering you now, whereas before they were just fine?
What if you discovered that it’s not your fault? Understanding how different kinds of food affect your biochemistry and physiology is important in understanding how to eat in a way that not only helps you lose weight and gain muscle, but also satiates you. Getting to the core of why your body is craving foods it doesn’t need, or is not absorbing the nutrients it needs, it of critical importance to finding a solution that gives your body the fuel it needs to build muscle, burn fat, and create energy.

Sexual Function

Declines in sexual function are multifactorial. Cenegenics patients tend to have improved sex lives. Medically however, decreased sexual function is very important because it is often the first symptom of atherosclerotic disease; it is a precursor or warning sign for more serious sequela, such as heart attack or stroke. Improving sexual function can mean improving your overall health. As you may have guessed by now, there can be more than one cause. Hormonal decline, high levels of inflammation, atherosclerotic plaqueing, neurological damage, and other factors can be to blame.
When thinking about declines in sexual function, we tend to think about 2 areas. The first is in libido or desire, and the second is in performance.
  1. How has libido changed over the years? Compared to when you were in your 20s, how is your libido today?
  2. How has performance changed? Again, compared to when you were in your 20s, how is your performance?
Men often complain about a loss of stamina, while women often experience vaginal dryness and loss of orgasm. Most patients experience a return of libido and performance through the comprehensive approach taken by Cenegenics.

Energy

Declines in energy are common as we age and it is usually chalked up to “just getting older”. Indeed, many of our friends and family start slowing down as well, so it just seems “normal”. However, often it is metabolic, hormonal and lifestyle issues that are the causes of these energy declines. We all have seen others that are even older who seem to have boundless energy. What is different about them? More importantly, why do I have such low energy? And what would I do if I had more energy?

  1. If I had more energy, I would do/complete/perform ______________.
  2. What are some things I used to do that I just don’t have energy for anymore?
  3. How would my work be improved if I had more energy at the end of the day?
  4. How would my relationships improve with my kids, spouse and friends if I had more energy to do more activities with them?
  5. What am I missing out on because I’m wiped out by the mid-afternoon?
  6. I can get through the day, but I really have to push myself compared to when I was younger (not a question, but a reflection).
  7. How much better would I compete against my peers, or competition, if I had the energy I had when I was in my 20s, but the wisdom and experience that I have now?

Those are just a few questions to consider to help you think about how important this symptom of aging is. The decline in energy may be due to a number of factors, perhaps even in combination. Potential causes of energy decline include, but are not limited to, low testosterone, hypothyroidism, adrenal fatigue, sleep disturbances, metabolic syndrome, food or other allergies, nutrient deficiencies and immune system abnormalities. At Cenegenics, we dig deep beneath the surface of the symptoms to address the underlying cause of energy loss so that it can be corrected.
